About

The Commercial Bar and Kitchen has taken a 120-year-old, heritage-listed building and guided it into the present day through an intensive restoration process.

Our History

Located on Railway Parade in Midland, the land on which the Commercial Hotel now stands was originally purchased by Ernest Wood. A subdivision of the land, Helena Vale Section E was released in 1895 and the hotel site formed lots 18 and 37 within the subdivision.  James Henry Negus and Frederick Hollis purchased the lots in September and November 1895 respectively before James Henry Ross purchased both lots on 13 November 1900.

The birth of the Commercial Hotel occurred on 20 October 1901 when the property was mortgaged to the Swan Brewery. A lease was then taken up by James Henry Ross and Edward Moore on 1 January 1902 for a five-year term. Ross and Moore operated the hotel until 24 August 1903 when the lease was handed back to Swan Brewery.

Welbourne Lamzed took over the lease on 7 November 1903 and remained at the Commercial Hotel until 7 November 1913. During Lamzed's time at the hotel, he employed a number of managers to operate the hotel.

The Swan Brewery returned to operate the Commercial Hotel at the completion of Lamzed's lease in 1913 and in 1948 sold the hotel to Sophie McIntyre.  Unfortunately, very little information on the history of the hotel between 1948 and 1980 is available. During that period the hotel had a number of operators including Val Scott, Wally Daly, Dolf Clowes, Gary Gibellini and Heather Hearn.

The name of the hotel was changed to the Commercial Tavern in 1979 and the tavern was then purchased by Tony Pileggi who employed Allan Bolton as the licencee and manager.
